CMA Awards 2021: Keith Urban to perform 'Wild Hearts,' a song for the 'dreamers' - The Tennessean
When Keith Urban steps on stage at the CMA Awards, he'll sing a song for "all of the dreamers" — like himself.
Urban returns Wednesday to "country music's biggest night" for a performance of his latest single "Wild Hearts," a semi-autobiographical tune Urban co-wrote for the "born to be rockstars" throwing fuel on a fire of ambition.
In "Wild Hearts," Urban sets the scene of his first concert as a five-year-old: Johnny Cash, who he saw with his dad at a boxing hall in Brisbane, Australia.
He sings, "Saw the man in black/ Spotlight in the air/ Heard a thousand screams/ Saw my daddy stare."
Urban began chasing his dream of country music stardom as an Australian kid who read "recorded in Nashville, Tennessee" on the back of virtually every album in his father's collection. He caught his dream — rising to the ranks of one of Nashville's most recognizable artists.
In the chorus, he raises a call to those aspiring for similar heights: "This goes out to the drifters/ And all of the dreamers ready to fly/ All those born to be rock stars/ Lifting their guitars and painting the sky."

CMA Awards 2021: Brothers Osborne's 'Younger Me' brings notes of inclusivity to stage
"I'm one of [the dreamers]," Urban told The Tennessean backstage Tuesday ahead of the CMA Awards. "To come from a little town in Australia and be able to come to Nashville and record, make music, get it on the radio, be able to tour. ... To get to be able to do that? It still feels like I just got here. It's crazy."
What would he say to those tuning into the CMA Awards with ideas of one day playing the show?
"Just ignore all the naysayers and use them as fuel for the fire," Urban said. "Provin' 'em wrong is motivation of itself. I had plenty of those people in my life."
The 55th annual CMA Awards airs Wedneday at 7 p.m. CST on ABC.
