Year in review: 25 biggest songs of the year - WCJB

Image
(Stacker) - Louis Armstrong once famously said, "Music is life itself. What would this world be without good music? No matter what kind it is." Whether rap, pop, country, or alternative, Armstrong was right—good music knows no genre. What matters is the way music makes us feel. The lyrics, the beat, the instrumentation, and the artists all come together to offer a few minutes of pure joy. To determine the biggest songs of 2021, Stacker took a look at Billboard's year-end Hot 100 chart, the definitive gauge for hit-makers. These songs made us dance, sing along, and provided comfort during yet another unprecedented year. They gave us a chance to escape for a while, to connect with ourselves and each other, and to feel understood and seen. One song signaled the return of a pop star who'd taken a bit of a hiatus from music; another track became a posthumous hit from a rapper who was tragically killed in his West Hollywood rental home, and yet another smash marked the mass...

The Year In Gospel Charts 2021: Kanye West, Maverick City Music & CeCe Winans Lead - Billboard

Image
Billboard' s Top Gospel Artist of 2021 is superstar Kanye West, repeating from his wins in 2019 and 2020 as the genre's top artist as well as top male. West is also the Top Christian Artist of 2021. West carries the year on the strength of his second faith-based album, Donda , which is the Top Gospel Albums No. 1 LP for 2021. Billboard's year-end music recaps represent aggregated metrics for each artist, title, label and music contributor on the weekly charts dated Nov. 21, 2020, through Nov. 13, 2021. The rankings for MRC Data-based recaps reflect equivalent album units, airplay, sales or streaming during the weeks that the titles appeared on a respective chart during the tracking year. Any activity registered before or after a title's chart run isn't considered in these rankings. That methodology detail, and the November-November time period, account for some of the difference between these lists and the calendar-year recaps that are independently compiled by MR...

Chalte Chalte (1976) - The Hindu

Image
In the hustle-bustle of everyday life, artists often tend to forget some of the gems they leave behind. Back in 1977 Gulzar penned a song which would probably be remembered as Lata Mangeshkar's signing off song. The song from the film "Kinara", "Meri awaaz hi pehchaan hai" still lingers on, long after the film is consigned to inner recesses of our memory. Back then Gulzar did not realise the import of the words, it was only when Lata herself pointed this out that it dawned on him that the song could as well have been written for her. One can say something similar about Kishore Kumar. His song in "Chalte Chalte", a 1976 film directed by Sunder Dar, "Chalte chalte mere ye geet yaad rakhna" echoes in our ears though the film is long forgotten. Yes, it had the delectable Simi Garewal, way ahead of her times. It exuded oomph when the word was seldom used in polite circles. It had beautiful Nazneen too. She gave it all and left many wondering why...

Column: Tinley Park teachers acting like gangsters is new normal in a culture that glorifies guns - Chicago Tribune

Kyle Rittenhouse, left, with backwards cap, walks along Sheridan Road in Kenosha, Wisconsin Aug. 25, 2020, with another armed civilian. (ADAM ROGAN The Journal Times/AP) A recent viral video that showed adults and students at Tinley Park High School holding cellphones like guns should be a teachable moment about how gun culture has warped America. The video that circulated widely on TikTok and Facebook in November showed students and adults stepping through doorways, rounding corners, sitting at lunch tables and in other situations, all while pointing devices at the camera as if they were guns. "We were extremely disappointed when we saw this video," Bremen High School District 228 said in a statement. "It's extremely disheartening that our students would find this content or prank to be humorous. It's even more saddening that a student would choose to mislead staff members who are there to support them and help them every day." ...

Stadium concerts are slowly returning to Victoria and Imagine Dragons is ready to make you a believer. The pop-rock band best known for its songs Thunder, Believer, and Radioactive will perform at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on April 10, 2022, it announced Tuesday (Dec. 14). Rising to fame in the early 2010s with its angsty hits, the band hasn't been heard from much since it released its album Origins in 2018. But following a three-year hiatus, Imagine Dragons came out with its fifth studio album, Mercury–Act 1, in September. The name is inspired by the word "mercurial," according to the concert announcement press release, an adjective usually used to describe someone who has sudden mood changes. "Mercury–Act 1 is a candid album that abandons metaphorically charged lyrics and instead embraces emotional extremities, holding nothing back," the release adds. The new album features singles Enemy with East Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D., and Wrecked, which...

Ken Kragen, a Force Behind ‘We Are the World,’ Dies at 85 - The New York Times

Image
Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones were among the public faces of that 1985 fund-raising record. But behind the scenes, Mr. Kragen made it all happen. The entertainer and humanitarian Harry Belafonte was so inspired by "Do They Know It's Christmas?," the record released by an all-star lineup of British and Irish musicians in late 1984 to raise money for famine relief in Africa, that he wanted to do something similar with American musicians. But Mr. Belafonte, in his late 50s at the time, knew he had to recruit current stars to pull off the idea. "I needed a younger generation of artists," he wrote in his memoir, "My Song" (2011), "the ones at the top of the charts right now: Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers and Cyndi Lauper. When I looked at the management of most of these artists, I kept seeing the same name: Ken Kragen." Mr. Kragen, after some persuading, latched onto Mr. Belafonte's vision and became a pivotal ...
