Tones and I Aims for Happiness on New Single ‘Fly Away’ - Rolling Stone

Image
Tones and I reflects on chasing her dreams in the new single "Fly Away." The singer wrote the track while quarantining at home in Melbourne, Australia, during the pandemic. Co-produced with Dann Hume, the video features Tones standing on a stage in the spotlight, later joined by a crowd in an open field. "I had a dream that someday I would just fly away," she sings as scenes of couples dancing, getting married, and cuddling flash across the screen. "'Fly Away' is about chasing your dreams, reaching your goals, and the realities that comes with it," Tones said in a statement. "Being a busker, I obviously had bigger dreams. However, this song is inspired by the way I thought I would feel versus the way I actually feel. I think that's very powerful, at least to me. It's about genuine happiness and what we think we need to have happiness versus what we actually want. The truth is we only ever want anything because we think it wil...

Nirvana Techno Tribute Turns Cobain Songs Into Dance Tracks - Loudwire

Image
A double album's worth of Nirvana songs re-emerge as electronic music cuts on the new covers album  Come as You Are: Nirvana Reimagined as House & Techno . The tribute from electro collective TECHROW arrived on Oct. 1. And in the spirit of late Nirvana bandleader Kurt Cobain's championing of gay rights, it will help support the LGBTQIA+ community, with a portion of proceeds going to GLAAD and other outreaches. Produced by electronic musicians Jonathan Hay and Cain McKnight, the album's 27 tracks honor the 27 years since Cobain's death as well as the 27 years he was alive. The effort sports appearances from fellow EDM-minded artists such as The Knocks' JPatt, 41X, Sara Cooper , Maurice Brown (Anderson .Paak) and Chip E. ( Frankie Knuckles ), plus rockers  Scott Page  (Pink Floyd) and John Norwood Fisher (Fishbone). The tribut...

Passing the Time With a Piano-Playing Pilot - The New York Times

Image
As a pilot with United Airlines, Beau Brant flies North American routes. At every layover, he looks to play a mix of jazz, classical and more for his crew and strangers. It's after midnight at the Palm Court in Cincinnati and staff is trying to close. Lights are dimmed as the last of the martini glasses and beer bottles are scooped up. But Beau Brant is still at the piano, playing for stragglers. Finally, a waitress gives him the "wrap-it-up" sign. Probably a good idea, since he has a flight to catch the next day, and he can't be late. He's the captain. Perhaps there are other piano-playing airline pilots, but how many have cut seven albums, performed for a U.S. president and had an original song used by Oprah Winfrey? Mr. Brant, 41, has been playing — and flying — most of his life. He started on the piano at age 3 and was flying by 12. A pilot with United Airlines for 17 years, Mr. Brant considers flying job number one. But with every layover, he looks for a plac...

5 Epic Rock + Metal Songs Inspired by Books, Selected by Twelve Foot Ninja - Loudwire

Image
Australia's Twelve Foot Ninja went big in 2021, not content just releasing Vengeance , their first new album since 2016, but having also dished out an accompanying comic book and a nearly 1,000 page novel, The Wyvern and the Wolf , which dives head-first into the origin story of the fictitious being the band is named after. So, we invited singer Kin Etik to pick his favorite rock and metal songs inspired by books, short stories and other pieces of literature. Distilling an entire story or even part of it, as told in its original form through literature, is a complex challenge and one that comes with a certain aura of expectations — if it's a legendary book, you better make damn sure your song is worthy of being mentioned in the same breath! That's not a problem regarding any of Kin Etik's selections, as he embraced a wide range of adaptations lifted from the pages of works by H.P. Lovecraft, George Orwell and even psychedelic adventurer Timothy Leary, among oth...

21 of Our Favorite Pop-Punk Songs From This Year, Including Halsey, Willow, and Olivia Rodrigo - POPSUGAR

Image
Olivia Rodrigo might have said it best when she conjured up one the most angsty lyrics of 2021: "I'm so sick of 17. Where's my f*cking teenage dream?" Even 20 years after the height of the punk-rock era, her song "Brutal" embraces the prevailing "I hate this town — you wouldn't understand" sentiment that rings through some of the best pop-punk songs of all time, reminding us that skater culture, DIY nose piercings, and crunchy guitar riffs didn't fade away in 2003. The days of pop-punk past never truly dissolved, with bands like Blink-182, Green Day, The Offspring, Sum 41, and Newfound Glory still going strong, but 2021 has ushered in a whole new crew of pop-punk icons. From established rockers like Willow Smith and Halsey to rising artists like Meet Me at the Altar and Action/Adventure, there's no shortage of new punk songs to blast at full volume when you're in the mood to sulk or just need an excuse to rock out. So pump up t...

Every Hit Added to Rolling Stone's Top-100 'Greatest Songs' - Newsweek

Image
These are the songs added to the top 100 of Rolling Stone magazine's "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in its 2021 update—the first full revision since the original 2004 list. The publication made a slight update in 2010, adding 25 songs from the 2000s and 1994's "Juicy" by The Notorious B.I.G. Back then, the top 25 remained unchanged. In September 2021, the music magazine gave the list a total reboot. Thirty songs from the 2010s were added, and more than half the entries did not feature on either of the two previous editions. Some of the songs in the 2004 top 100 are either out of the list completely. RS Charts: Drake’s ‘Way 2 Sexy’ Rebounds to Number One - Rolling Stone

Image
Drake's "Way 2 Sexy" returned to Number One on the Rolling Stone Top 100 Songs chart. The collaboration with Future and Young Thug, which pulled in 19.9 million streams, has spent four non-consecutive weeks in the top spot; it was briefly displaced by the Coldplay and BTS collaboration "My Universe," which fell to Number Seven (6.5 million streams) in its second week, even as it out-sold all its competitors.  It was a quiet week on the Top Songs chart: "Way 2 Sexy" nabbed Number One with just 156,603 project units, one of the lowest totals for a Number One in the chart's history. And the three songs that trailed "Way 2 Sexy" weren't behind by much — another Drake hit, "Knife Talk," earned 150,600 project units, while Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow's "Industry Baby" amassed 147,800, and the Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber's "Stay" garnered 144,100.
